Starehe Girls’ Centre Security Wall Fundraiser

Starehe Girls’ Centre Security Wall Fundraiser

Key Figures

Phase 1 Target: KES 8 Million
Amount Raised: KES 1.45 Million

Starehe Girls’ Centre (SGC) is a charitable institution that cares for and educates bright yet economically disadvantaged girls throughout Kenya. It emulates the spirit and ethos of the much renowned Starehe Boys’ Centre in advancing the doctrine of “The Starehe Way”. The Centre equips the girls not only with an education but also the necessary life skills to enable them realise their full potential and elevate them to compete in all spheres of life. The Centre’s campus is set on 55 acres of land in Njathaini, a rural setting 18 kilometres North of Nairobi and five kilometres off Kiambu Road.

In January 2005, Starehe Girls’ Centre admitted 72 young students from disadvantaged backgrounds as its first students. 15 years later, a total of 1,315 have passed through the Centre. The Centre has seen the girls achieve levels of excellence with 95 per cent of the girls gaining admission to public and international universities while others have joined diploma courses in reputable colleges. Currently, there are 720 girls being cared for and educated at the Centre.

The Need

Security has become a major issue in the SGC neighbourhood and our younger sisters have been exposed to danger. Unfortunately, the Girls’ Centre does not have a secure fence or perimeter wall, yet the dormitories are next to a forest and a large dam. There have been several security incidents concerning a number of girls.

We would like to appeal to you to dig deep and provide the needed support to Starehe Girls’ Centre during this time of need. A team has been put in place to plan the fundraiser and will be communicating the estimated costs and other detailed information.

Of urgency right now is to secure the area around the dam, which is approximately 300 metres. Our target is to raise KES 8 million to get this phase of work started, even as the finer details, including designs, bill of quantities and other details are worked on by the project team.
