Dr. Robert Maweu Mutula, MBS, KStJ – The First Starehian To Be Knighted

Dr. Robert Maweu Mutula, File Number 9706, Class of 1998, was knighted during an investiture of the Priory of Kenya of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem on 24 March 2022. This followed the sanction by Her Majesty THE QUEEN, the Sovereign Head of the Order, in The London Gazette. An investiture is a ceremony at which a Postulant receives the insignia of his/her grade, and in the case of knights, also invested with the robes of the Order.

Dr. Mutula joined St. John Kenya twenty-seven years ago at Starehe Boys’ Centre & School as a cadet. He has volunteered in the various levels of the organisation, exhibiting remarkable leadership that has seen his rise through the ranks to currently as the Chancellor of the Priory of St. John Kenya. He serves as the youngest Chancellor within the worldwide Order of St. John.

During the investiture ceremony, the Accolade of the Order was bestowed by three touches of the sword (dubbing) on the left shoulder by the Prior of the Priory of Kenya Mr. Paul Ndung’u in the distinguished presence of the Priory Chief Patron His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta.

The bestowal of the Accolade of the Order is the act by which a Knighthood of the Order is affirmed but not conferred. This means that there is no entitlement to use the title “Sir”, instead, Dr. Mutula is entitled to use the prefix KStJ after his name. Dr. Mutula becomes the first Starehian to be knighted, and the 8th Knight in Kenya. We congratulate him for this remarkable achievement. Natulenge Juu!
